The work displayed on these pages is a sampling of my
own designs and pieces commissioned by clients and designed by me to
suit their individual needs and tastes. Each piece is made with care and attention to detail and finishing, and
with the desire that it be owned and used with as much pleasure as I
had in making it. My furniture is built using hardwood lumber from trees
cut and milled on my own property except when an exotic or non-indigenous
species is requested by a client. The design process begins with a meeting with prospective clients. In some cases, when distances have been
too great however, the entire design has been developed by phone and
by fax. Although this method is slightly more time consuming the result
is the same: a piece that fulfills the wishes of the customer. At the initial meeting details of the piece are discussed: the dimensions,
type of wood, visible hardware, etc.. From this information a scaled drawing is prepared and presented
to the client at a second meeting. Any elements of the basic design concept that might prove unworkable
and that were not apparent at the initial meeting are discussed at this
time. I encourage clients to take a critical eye to the drawing and
to make whatever changes are desired, no matter how small or how many.
I enjoy the design process as much as the
making of the piece and will gladly redraw as often as necessary to
ensure that my client is completely satisfied. From the photographs on these pages you will see that elements of the inlay work have been used in different pieces of furniture, reshaped where necessary to suit the overall design of the piece. As a graphic artist using wood inlay as a medium, I can create original, custom-designed decorative motifs as well as representations, or exact replicas, of scenery, animals, or other images of a personal interest to a client, such as the wooden plaque at the entrance to this home. I welcome commissions of this kind and enjoy the challenge of such work. Pricing The cost of the piece is provided to the client with the first drawings. An adjustement to this amount will be made to reflect changes requested by the client which involve increased labour or materials. A fee is charged for the initial drawing; there is no charge for redrawing. Contact information: John
